It`s tough to beat a fine fall evening, unless of course, you are trying to beat or equal your own time in a 5000m foot race.

22 enthusiastic runners lined up at the Idlewild Park mailboxes and hurried around the familiar course. A prediction run is an opportunity for runners to guess at their own performance and win 2 prizes if they are also best in their category. The attractive and fitting prizes featured local vegetables, prepared by club members Marianne Nahm, and Tanis Tomlin.

Many of the early finishers achieved a sub-prediction time as they pushed through the course. Also, it was rewarding to recognize the participation of families; with the Helvoights, Bells and Pauls showing up in force, while the Mahers and Floers provided key volunteer support.  Submitted by Daryl Calder.

A great turnout for the Community Forest Enduro with 25 runners from 8 to 72 years old including 10 new Bigfooters (made up largely by a great contingent from Jaffray... the self-proclaimed South Country Rednecks).  The women's race was well contested with Tanis and Stephanie running on Chris Nakahara's heels in a well fought race (all running sub-40min races). Eight year old, Gabe Nicol, and 10 year old Shelby Lehmann showed they are runners to watch out for in the future as they finished in the thick of things. Bruce and Walter are proving you're never to old to get out and test yourself. Full results and updated Grand Prix standings are posted on the Events page

Winners earned some amazing looking Candied Apples prepared by Anna, while the rest of us enjoyed some tasty treats prepared by Debra and Heather.  Next race is the Northstar Rail Trail run on November 4th.... watch your e-mails and Facebook for more details shortly.

A classic Bigfoot 5000m race, ‘The Fall Fiver’ had it’s debut on a fine, early October evening. For the first time, runners had a chance to ‘predict’ their finish result. By guessing their speed and strength, a runner achieving  the closest ‘predicted time’ won a prize. By a margin of 2:1, runners exceeded their expectations.
Tanis and gang crafted wonderful fall themed prizes, with rosy apples, firm potatoes and pumpkins in 5 pound denominations. A fine butternut squash, disguised as a penguin, went to the best ‘predictor’. Michael nailed his time exactly in the quest for a second place performance. Daryl beat his time by 1 second, while Tanis, relentlessly pursued by Paige, was the 1st female, a few seconds over her expectation. Chris and Chris, 1st and 3rd, were both half a minute ‘slow’. Katherine, with the ‘wildest’ prediction, nevertheless, happily achieved a podium position.

Looking ahead beyond the ‘Enduro’, ‘Rail Trail Run’, ‘Nippler’, ‘Jingle Bell Tour’, ‘New Year’s Cross Country’, ‘AGM Banquet’ and ‘Run Your Heart Out’, runners will have another chance to ‘predict’ at the ‘March Forth’ 5k. Thanks again to our great executive and volunteers, and all our motivated members. Keep going strong!  Submitted by Daryl Calder.

Check out the latest Grand Prix results, so you can see if a final push will move you up the standings.  The results of the last 4-5 races have been tabulated and it looks like Chris Nakahara is going for the clean sweep getting the full amount of points.  Heather Maher and Stephanie McGregor are duking it out at the top of the womens list.

You have a few more chances to collect points with the Fall Fiver coming up in a couple of days, followed by the Enduro, Northstar Rail Trails and New Lake Nippler. See you out there running.

Hello Runners - This year the South Star Trail Run will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2013. The race will start from my house at 3250 53rd St. South and follow trails in the South Star Recreation network. Race start is 9 AM, registration open at 0830. Cost is $5 member/$10 non-member. The distance is 10.6 km. with about 600 feet of elevation. Typical trail conditions with rocks, roots and other distractions are part of the course along with beautiful scenery and the possibility of some wildlife (deer/birds/bear etc). Bears are uncommon and have never been a problem in the past.

Following the race there will be a BBQ lunch. The club will provide burgers and fixings along with fluids (juice, coffee, water) and fruit. If anyone wishes to bring a salad or sweets please feel free to make it ...a pot luck, but it is not mandatory to bring anything.

Past years have seen Ryan, Dallas and Laura Cain sweep the podium, but I have it on good advice that they have other commitments this year, opening up the field for other aspiring speed kings/queens.

Typical times for this run are 40-70 minutes. The record is sub 35 minutes. Use the link below to register. You can show up for the run without registering, but food will only be provided for those who indicate on the form that they will be attending the BBQ. If you have any special dietary needs (gluten, vegetarian) please email me at <rocke.robertson@shaw.ca> so that I can plan accordingly.

I am looking for a sweeper on a mountain bike if anyone has a desire to do that. It's a pretty entertaining bike with lots of moderately challenging up/down. Let me know at the shaw address above if you can volunteer for this task.e Bigfoot Mt. 11 hardy runners survived the heat to complete the Two Buttes Fell Race.  Other than the heat, all made it to the two hill tops without going to far astray.  A number of others came out to cheer on the runners and enjoy the hospitality (and pool) of Malcolm and Rona.

Results are posted on the Events page.

A The Bigfoot Mt. Baker Challenge run was held this past Sunday, July 7. 12 runners and 2 walkers elevated themselves above the crowd with lots of sweat and no tears. The weather was perfect and everyone had a good time. We ignored occasional comments about "I'll never do that again", noting that mothers often say that immediately after birth, but change their minds as time goes on. Chris Nakahara and Jo Ellen Floer were first male/first female with strong performances on this demanding hill climb. Thanks especially to Clark Stephen and Gary Billmark who drove vehicles and assisted with timing. Without them the race could not have been held.

A beautiful day saw a good turnout for the 15th Annual Peter Rosberg Memorial Race.  Forty one participants came out on Mother’s Day to compete in either the 6 or 10k distances.  Molly Miller (age 12) and Daryl Calder were the first female/male across the line for the 6k race. Stephanie McGregor and Ryan Hamilton were the speediest female and male at the 10k distance. Stephanie was also first in the Spring Honda Fun run on Saturday. Well done Stephanie!

Thanks to Doreen and Grant for putting on a fun event.

Results can be found at on the Events tab and scroll down to May to find the details....

We had all weather, but for the most part it was sunny with snow flurries driving runners from the finish inside for some hot chili.... A total of 38 runners (including 12 kids in the kids race) came out to take on the hills of Cranbrook and enjoy a nice Chili feast.  Brent Hughes and Cherie Cooper put on an impressive race, beating all comers. Check out the event results.

The Grand Prix has been updated and it looks like a show down is shaping up from the Kimberley contingent of the club between Chris Nakahara and Danielle Burki.  Thanks to all the volunteers for putting on a great race...

Good turnout for today's windy race. There were 47 runners who did the 5k plus several kids at the short distance. The speediest runners were Ryan Hamilton and Tanis Banks-Tomlin but the real winner is the Cranbrook Food Bank. The club was able to make a $200 donation from race proceeds plus several boxes of food!   Here are the race results

January 21, 2013

Last week saw the Bigfoot Running Club AGM attended by 39 members.  It was a fun social evening with wonderful potluck dishes provided by members supplemented by roasted chickens from the club. Several people shared running stories and T-shirts from races past.  The winners of the contest and bottles of wine were: 3rd place – Chris Bullock on the Trek Series, 2nd place – Samantha Karpyshin on a half marathon in Norway, and 1st place – Rocke to share with Jo Ellen & Joanna with a tale about losing his dog in the parking lot.
The annual club awards were also handed out.  Congratulations to Chris Bullock for the Unsung Hero Award (has done a lot for the club in the past year), Kathy Newman for the Most Inspirational Award, Heather Maher for the Grand Prix Female winner, and Daryl Calder for Grand Prix Male winner. The Grand Prix is based on the total of points calculated by age graded times earned per Bigfoot race attended. Heather attended 8 and Daryl attended 10 of 11 races in 2012. Well done to all recipients who also received gift certificates for a local lunch spot in Cranbrook.
The club has seen an increase in membership in 2012. New signage including road and distance markers and banners were purchased by the club.  The executive remains the same with one new addition. If you would like a fully copy of the minutes from the AGM, please let us know.
Twelve races are planned for 2013.  Watch out for the next one on February 17th - Run Your Heart Out!
Hope to see you there.

Happy New Year everyone....! 19 runners made it out for a successful start to the year for the Two Tops Challenge (results). Crazy costumes, mulled wine pitstop, and well packed (although deep snow base) made for a fun run through the ever scenic hills around Wycliffe
A delicious potluck and fun gift prize giving afterward made for a fun day.

This race is the start of a new Grand Prix series (posted here).

Note, a calculation error was discovered in the previously posted 2012 Grand Prix results (everyone was being compared to the 'female' world records', so the fix has resulted in a few changes including a very tight race for the 'Top 5' award).  Here are the updated final 2012 results (Top 5/Overall).

Come out to the Bigfoot AGM Social on Jan. 12 at Knox Presbyterian Hall for the annual club awards, race story telling and delicious potluck.

Jingle Bell runs are in and a good time was had by all... many impressive X-mas lights were seen.  Here's a submission from Daryl:

At the crack of 7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 19th, 2012, 7 intrepid Bigfoot runners headed out in search of Cranbrook’s finest Christmas light displays. Jo Ellen led us along quiet streets and lanes towards the Highlands area. It was a classic late December evening, light snow falling and minus 5 degrees with little traffic. Sure enough, a number of homeowners had gone to considerable trouble to illuminate their front lawns and house fronts with Christmas-themed imagery. After climbing a moderately ‘significant’ hill, we turned right, opposite the famous Idlewild T-shirt run start. Soon, a particularly eclectic display came into view featuring an indescribable array of illuminated objects and symbolism. After chatting with the enthusiastic owner/operator, we curled in to the extravagant ‘Candy Cane Lane’ and it’s over- the- top depictions of snowmen, reindeer and nativity scenes. One of the residents chose a ‘contrary’ view of the celebration; a Grinch appeared to be yanking colored lights from the eaves and stuffing them into a sack! After cruising by a few more panoramas and clocking 8.4 kms, it was time to relax for a few minutes at Hot Shots. A fine evening all-in all.  D.

To work off that Turkey and get a jump start on your resolutions, there are two upcoming events: (i) the Turkey Run-off by the Kootenay O Club on Dec. 29th; and, (ii)  the 5th Two Tops Challenge at Malcolm's house in Wycliffe on New Years Day.  Both are social events and a lot of fun.  Happy Holidays everyone!!!

'March Forth' was a great success... the warm temperatures on the thermometer was a bit misleading, but the blustery conditions didn't stop 24 adults and 5 kids from 'marching forth' on the gravelly roads (Photos).  Many improvements were noted for a number of runners on the same course as 'Run Your Heart Out' (see Results).  We are now calculating age and gender-corrected results so you can compare yourself amongst the whole field... 70yr old Bruce Williams was in the thick of things breathing down the neck of Malcolm and Daryl in some impressive times.

All the Bigfoot race dates have been selected for 2012 and are now posted on the race calendar on the Events page.  We will be announcing shortly the format for the Grand Prix award to be awarded at the end of the year, so be sure to join us to as many events as possible to score points through out the season.   At this time, we are awarding points based on the percentage of your speed relative to the world record for your age and gender for that distance.  The RYHO and the March Forth were the first two races toward either a year long series or perhaps a 'Spring' and 'Fall' race series.  We are thinking of taking the best 3 of 5 results to determine the winner, but may adjust the format at our next executive meeting.  If you have any suggestions, pass them on to an executive member for consideration at our next executive meeting.

Bigfoot just had a very successful AGM social wit over 35 adult plus kids in attendence for an excellent potluck with some wonderful raconteurs who showed their skills during the story telling/T-shirt contest, annual awards presented and a new executive sworn in.  The Presbyterian Church hall turned out to be an excellent venue complimented with a children's playroom right adjacent to the hall.  Members supplemented the chicken supplied by the Club with delicious sides of hot dishes, salads and wonderful deserts! We are excited to have a number of new directors including Dave Paul, Tanis Tomlin, Debra Parker, Joel Robison, to contribute to an active 2012 year.

This years CCF Enduro had a twist... we teamed up with Blue Lake Center to put on the Goblin Gallop with both a 4k and 8.9k option with prizing based on the best halloween costume.  Twenty nine goblins ran and walked the 4k course and twelve runners raced the longer course.  Aspen Parker out ran everyone on the 4k course with a blazing fast time.  Chris Nakahara stayed ahead of tight race for 2 to 4 position on the long course.  All in all everyone seemed to have a great time and the event was a successful fundraiser for sending kids to the Blue Lake Center to gain an appreciation for the outdoors.  Full race results are posted here.

October 19, 2014

This year's Northstar Rail Trail run changed things up from previous years.  Limited pre-registrations resulted in a last minute change to a single leg race from Wycliffe to Cranbrook with paired teams going for the lowest combined times.  A total of 14 runners toed the line and enjoyed a scenic run over the St. Mary's back to the awaiting  refreshment table loaded with freshly baked muffins.  The team of JoEllen and Heather edged out the Lost Dogs (Chris and Clem) for the team prize.  Chris Bullock took advantage of Chris Nakahara's rare absence to take the win for the Solo trophy.   Full results are posted here.
